Internet Security
In almost
any company, management trusts their IT department to manage and secure the
information.
However, companies can't be forgiving when it comes to problems with Internet
access and security.
I recently
performed services for a company in which management "trusted" their IT department
to provide Internet access. The main responsibility of the IT department was
to make sure the equipment was working properly and to oversee the overall
security of information.
After I located problems, such as misconfigured Cisco routers, vulnerable
Windows NT servers that were running corporate Web sites, hacked DNS servers
behind a firewall, e-mail servers being used for SMTP relaying, and employees
with penetrated Linux boxes sniffing packets off Ethernet, the management's
"trust" was no longer there.
