Getting StartedSpybot Search and Destroy is a Spyware Remover first. There are more features which will be covered later. This introduction will include instructions on how to install and run a Spyware Only Check and Remove what has been found. To install the program, double click on the Downloaded file (spybotsd12.exe). Follow the prompts to install. If your native language is English, there is no need to install the Language files. If not, please do. Once Spybot has been installed, it will run a Wizard to help get you Set up. You can choose the Language you want to use, create shortcuts and most importantly Update the program. Just like Anti Virus, Spyware killers have to constantly be updated. New Spyware is being written everyday. Keeping up with it is as important as installing Spybot was in the first place. Please keep Spybot Updated to have the most effective protection possible whenever you run a scan. |
| for a Quick Spyware Check & Removal only......... a brief tutorial | ||
The
page shown on the left will open. It is the Settings page The defaults
are pre-selected. You can safely leave it like this. Or you may choose
to make changes. I leave the Main Settings Section as is. I want Spybot to make a backup of what it removes and I want my settings saved for example. So I leave the items checked. If there's a problem after running Spybot, you can restore the backup. **Note that after removing Spyware, the programs which installed it may no longer run. Look to the left. Clicking the Recovery Icon will bring up the backups list. The next step is to Download the latest Updates if you have not already. Click the "Online" Button on the left. |
| Click on "Search
For updates" After the search has completed, the available Updates will
be listed. Choose which Updates you would like to Download. Click
"Download updates." The Updates will self install. The screen will
change again. Sometimes is process is slow and it looks like spybot locked up just keep on working and it should update eventuality. Sometimes the Default Download Location will produce an Error. If that happens, look in the right panel. There you will find a small arrow next to the name of the current Download site. Click on it for a list of alternate sites. One of those should be able to retrieve the files you have selected. |
| Scan the System | ||
To
start the Scan, click the Magnifying Glass Icon Labeled "Check for
Problems". Spybot will now perform the scan.
The picture on the left shows a Scan Result. If there has been any Spyware found, the Name(s) of the Problem Program(s) will Show in Red letters. If in Red, this is known Spyware and by default will be selected for Removal. You can uncheck any of these to prevent their uninstall, but it is generally recommended that you allow Spybot to remove all Spyware. Make your choices and then at the bottom right, click on "Fix Selected Problems". Spybot Search and Destroy will clean up the problem areas and make a backup of what it has removed. Follow the prompts if there are any. Spybot will also create a log of its activities by default. |
This program has many other added features. A second page
which goes into more depth on using Spybot has now been added. Learn more
about the Immunize feature to protect yourself from possible future threats.
Read about Cookies, removing Usage Tracks.... and more. This new page will
take you step by step through the program.
| Open the program. Check for Updates. Perform a scan. If that is all you ever do, you'll be fine. This page is for those of you who want to go to the next level - have a closer look at your system. And use the other features Spybot offers for added protection. |
Spybot - Open in Advanced ModeLooking at the left panel At the top you see the Spybot S&D button. It is not plain like the others. Notice its icon is on the button. The Icon indicates that Spybot S&D is the current choice. Each time you click on one of the wide buttons, that button will move to the top. The Gray panel will now contain its icons. Why the icons on the left?Clicking on an icon in the gray panel will bring up its information in the right Pane. Open Spybot & click one to have a look. Each icon represents a subsection. Clicking on Search and Destroy will bring up the Scan Page. Recovery will get you the list of backups created from past scans. And finally there is Immunize. This is a very important and useful feature. |
Think of it as "Spybot Explorer." Once you understand the basics, things will be much clearer. |
What is Immunize?The other two Icons in the S&D panel have already been discussed on this and the first page. This leaves Immunize. Immunizing is an attempt at preventing Spyware from installing in the future. |
How to ImmunizeClicking on the immunize icon brings up a message box alerting you to the need to add more protections. Click OK on the message Box. Click the "Immunize" button in the right pane to install. Starting with the Products blocked: Installers have a Long identification number called a CLSID. (Class ID) When Internet Explorer is called to run an ActiveX, it first looks at a particular Registry key where a list of Compatibles can be found. The list is scanned and if all is clear, then that particlar ActiveX will be run. Many current Spyware CLSID's are known. It is possible to set the killbit. What that means is there is a way to prevent these ActiveX's from running and installing their Toolbars etc behind your back. New ones are written constantly so this is another thing to check when you Update. Press the buttons and follow the prompts. The Browser Helper Object to block Bad Downloads. From the drop down menu, I select "Ask For Blocking Confirmation" I like to know what is going on when it is happening. Click the install button if you want to install this feature. There is an uninstall button for each of these two options if you change your mind. At the bottom of this page are three more options which I do not select. It's my personal preference because they lock the USER out but not the Spyware. They offer no protection from Spyware. These options prevent the User from accessing Internet Options. Or if you choose to protect the Home Page, you are prevented from changing that, but Spyware is not. Making the HOSTS file read only can easily be overcome by a Spyware Program. I think the first two cause confusion and should never be checked unless you are trying to restrict another User of the computer. Making the HOSTS file Read Only is not as inconvenient, but in my opinion, not necessary. But go ahead and make it read-only. If just to annoy those Spyware writers. One or two more lines of code for them to copy and paste into their program code. |

| Settings File sets, Settings, & Directories | ||||
File Sets - The default Spybot Scan will look for
Spyware and more. It is very thorough. There are extras you can add -
System Internals & Tracks.
System Internals- looks at the registry. It checks paths to files
for example to see if they are correct or missing. Do not use this to
remove anything unless you know what you are doing. Go to a Tech Help
Forum and ask for advice. The people there will be glad to help. |
Directories - |
Installation and Main Settings - I leave as is. The defaults create backups, logs, display dialogs to let you know what changes are going to be made. You have the choice to cancel. Scan Priority - This is a Tech issue. Let Windows handle this. Normal is the default. If you give the scan a different priority, you are changing the way the CPU handles information. Other background processes may suffer as a result. Automation - 1.) Program Start This section offers you some nice choices. Including immunizing automatically if the program has been updated, closing if nothing has been found, fixing all problems automatically(I don't do this) and several others. If you choose "Wait until specified programs have quit", another page will pop up. It will include a list of currently running programs. Double click on one of these to add it to the list. Turning off your AV or other background tasks can help to speed up the scan and/or avoid possible conflicts. Remember too that a file cannot be removed it it's in use. Make your choices. 2.) System Start Would you like to run Spybot at Start? If so, have a look here. Nothing is checked by default. Set up Spybot to run the way you like. The options are the same as above except for the Immunize Update. Web update - I like this section. You can have Spybot search the Web for Updates each time you start it. Or remind you to search. Being up to date is as important as running Spybot. Keep current with new Spyware. Out of date is not effective. A few other choices here too. Log File settings - I leave this section as is. The last option is unchecked by default. If you select it, when new log information is written, the old information will be erased. Look & Feel - To make the program easier to use for blind Users. Bug Report - Bug Reporting is discussed on this page in the Online Section. Have a quick look and leave the defaults unless asked to change them by a member of TEAM Spybot at their helpsite. Expert settings - Up to you. There are a couple of extra buttons added to the Results list if you choose. External viewers - If you have made a change to your settings, don't
like it and can't remember how to change back, |
| Excludes - Don't look for this. I want to keep it. | ||
Products ![]() If you want to continue using certain programs and they require you to keep the Spyware that came bundled with their installers, you can use Products Excludes to keep them off the Scan Results list. Looking at the picture, notice that there are quite a few tabs. Each tab represents one Product category. Open Spybot and go to Excludes>Products. Click a tab to see the list for that category. |
Single Excludes After performing a scan, right click on any item in the Results Window. You'll get a context menu.It's possible to deselect an item from here. See it listed in the Single Excludes Pane. You can also use this context menu to get more details on the item or to save the results of the scan to the clipboard. You may be posting at a Forum and this is a quick way to copy the scan results into a reply there. |
Cookies
If you have chosen to Clean Usage Tracks, the cookies folder is included. The entire contents will be removed. A lot of Sites store your ID in cookies. You are recognized on that Site because there is a cookie in place. Without it, you may have to sign in each visit. Clicking the cookies icon shows a list of all cookies present. Place a checkmark next to any cookie you want to keep. The selected cookies will now be protected from removal. |
File Extensions
Clears the history of Open and Save Dialogs. You may want to keep this record of the files with certain file extensions you use frequently. Selecting a file extension will prevent these from being removed from the dialogs history list. Not applicable to all Windows versions |

Secure Shredder - Erases Files Resident - When you Immunized, if you chose to install the Download Blocker, the list of items Spybot has blocked will be found here. ActiveX - Lists the ActiveX's which are currently installed. Also lets you know whether they are something to be concerned about. (if there is information available) BHO's - Browser Helper Objects. A great invention. But in the wrong hands, these can be used to Hijack your Home and Search Pages and invade your privacy. BHO's - Those Lovely added Toolbars and a couple other things too. Browser Pages - Lists your current Home and Search Page Settings. Hosts file - Great way to avoid being directed to sites you do not want to be directed to for a drive by download, cookie or to display ads on your Browser Screen. Spybot will add sites to your Hosts file or create one if you choose. Process list - What's currently running on your Computer? System Startup - Looks at a few Registry Keys. Known as the run keys to see what is set to startup. Not complete. There are many other locations where startups are arranged. Winsock LSP's - Definitely important if you cannot get online.These are the links in the chain listed in the Winsock2 Registry key. LSP = Layered Service Providers. If one is missing the chain is broken - you are offline until the chain has been repaired. Also lets us know that you have been signed up for a proxy server. Sometimes behind your back. Sometimes because you have not read an install agreement. You never know what else you are getting in the "bargain". Please do not try to make any changes to this on your own. This is for informational purposes only! View Report - Have a look at the total picture. You can choose what to include and exclude from the report. Click the icon to bring up a new right pane with a set of check boxes. Make your selections.
| That's quite a
list!
However, it is not anything to worry about. Most of these are just going to list what you have or what is running or set to run at Startup. It is informative. If you don't understand it, and have a question about an item, post at a Help Forum or do a little research. I am going to write a bit more about some of these on another page and provide links to sites with more detailed information. |
